The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a stark warning about the growing risk of nuclear catastrophe as Israel intensifies its strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. In a strongly worded statement released Tuesday, Moscow condemned the Israeli operations as “illegal under international law” and warned they could push the world to the brink of disaster.
“The ongoing intensive attacks by the Israeli side on peaceful nuclear facilities in Iran are illegal from the point of view of international law, create unacceptable threats to international security and push the world towards a nuclear catastrophe,” the ministry stated.
The condemnation follows days of escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Israel launched a series of strikes across Iranian territory on Friday, targeting what it claims are sites connected to Tehran’s alleged nuclear weapons development. Iran has consistently denied the accusations and responded with a barrage of drone and missile attacks targeting Israeli positions.
According to Moscow, Israel’s campaign not only destabilizes the Middle East but also undermines the international nuclear non-proliferation framework. The Russian Foreign Ministry accused Israel’s allies—particularly in the West—of enabling the offensive through political pressure and biased resolutions.
“The Western camp's attempts to manipulate the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and use it to settle political scores are costing the international community dearly,” the statement read. “Such behavior is completely unacceptable.”
Russia pointed to the recent resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors, which accused Iran of violating the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Moscow alleges that this resolution, reportedly pushed by the US, UK, France, and Germany, provided Israel with a “green light” to act unilaterally.
“The harsh reaction to Israel’s attack on Iran from most of the international community illustrates that the Jewish state is only supported by countries acting as its accomplices,” the ministry added.
Tensions have reached their highest point in years, with fears growing that a prolonged exchange of military strikes could draw in more regional actors and potentially trigger a larger war. In a region already plagued by instability, Russia’s warning adds a new layer of urgency to calls for diplomatic de-escalation.
The international community remains divided. While Western powers have focused criticism on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, countries such as Russia and China have expressed growing alarm over what they view as provocative Israeli military actions.
As the crisis unfolds, the world watches with concern, hoping to avoid the nightmare scenario that many now fear: a full-scale regional war involving nuclear-sensitive facilities.
